The Southern Vermont College men’s and women’s basketball team wrapped up their pre-holiday break schedule last week, with the men gaining a win to push their record to 2-1 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. The men will be the first to return to action after Christmas, with a spot in the Williams College Tournament and an opening round game with the Ephs on Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at 8 p.m. GO MOUNTAINEERS!
Mountaineers Beat Albertus Magnus at Home, Falls to Norwich on Road
Southern Vermont College’s men’s basketball team ran out to an early 19-8 lead, received 25 points from junior forward Doug Hammond and 24 from sophomore guard Mark Edmonds, and gained a 93-82 home-court victory Saturday, December 10, over Albertus Magnus College. Southern Vermont upped its Great Northeast Athletic Conference record to 2-1 with the win 3-5. Albertus Magnus fell to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in conference. “It was a game of offensive runs; we were very pleased with our good runs, but less than satisfied with our lack of focus between those runs,” said head coach Mike McDonough . “Bot tom line is that it was a game we were in control from start to finish.”
Hammond ( Brooklyn , NY ) hit 11-of-15 shots from the floor, 3-of-5 from the line, and grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds (14 on the defensive end) and three blocked shots. Edmonds ( Albany , NY ), who missed much of last season with an ankle injury, hit 10-of-15 from the floor, including three 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Chris Matte ( Hudson Falls , NY ) added 14 points, including three 3-pointers and nine assists, while sophomore forward Oriol Morer ( Barcelona , Spain ) added 15 points. Senior guard Tim Bonnett ( Laurel , MD ) had seven points, nine rebounds, and six assists. “Again, our strength is having multiple guys contributing, and tonight Mark had his best game to date,” McDonough said.
Earlier in the week, on Dec. 7, the Mountaineers lead by 11 points on six occasions throughout the first half and got a monster 23-point, 21--rebound effort from Hammond but the Mountaineers could not hold off a second-half charge from the Cadets and fell 79-73. “Doug’s double-double provided another standout performance, and we had a great start and controlled tempo much of the game,” said McDonough . “But Norwich ’s transition and outside shooting became factors in the second half.” Norwich took a big lead in the opening moments of the second half, after a 37-30 Mountaineer half-time lead. But, Southern Vermont kept pace and had several chances to get back into the game. Matte hit a 3-pointer and closed the gap to five with 40 seconds left, to give the Mountaineers a chance. But following a stop on defense after Matte’s three, a missed Mountaineer shot attempt and a Norwich free throw closed out the action.
“We came away knowing that this one was in our hands, we just have to do a better job of not getting in the hole,” McDonough said. Hammond hit 11-of-14 shots from the floor and added two blocks. Edmonds scored 15 points, including two 3-pointers, and Bonnett added 17 points.
Mountaineer Women’s Team Searching for First Win
The Southern Vermont College women’s basketball team lost twice last week --65-31 at College of St. Joseph’s (VT) on December 8 and 55-10 at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on December 10 – to fall to 0-8 (0-0 in GNAC) on the season. Against St. Joseph’s, sophomore forward Patricia Johnson (Bennington, VT) scored 13 points and had seven blocks, and sophomore forward Victoria Wilkerson (Warwick, RI) grabbed 10 rebounds and scored seven points. But, a 33-12 first-half lead by the hosts proved too much to overcome.
Against MCLA, sophomore forward Kristina Caulfield ( Groveland, MA) grabbed 10 rebounds. The women Mountaineers will return to action January 7 with a home game at Newbury College and next play at home January 10 against Utica College at 5 p.m.
