Alumni Profile
John Oswald ’95 John Oswald was an adult student at Southern Vermont College, commuting from his home in Greenwich, New York, from 1991–1994. He had a friend who had recently graduated, and recommended the College to him. The student-teacher ratio and location of the College both were appealing to John, and he chose Southern Vermont College as the place to pursue his degree in Criminal Justice. Throughout his studies, John worked as a paralegal, and then as a law clerk, at his family’s law firm. Despite his hectic schedule, he earned above-average grades and was valedictorian of the graduating Class of 1994. John believes that the courses he attended at Southern Vermont College served as a great transition from high school to law school. His professors taught him to think, rather than simply to repeat. Dan Tange, then Coordinator of the Criminal Justice degree program, was a “remarkable human being and a great inspiration. He taught me to be as prepared as possible for each and every class, and that helped me tremendously in law school.” After graduating from Southern Vermont College, John went on to attend Albany Law School. He completed his law degree in 1998 and has been a partner at Oswald and McMorris in Fort Edward, New York, since. The firm is a general practice, specializing in Criminal, Administrative, and Family Law. In addition, John returned to Southern Vermont College for the fall semester of 2002 to teach a course in Labor Relations. John enjoys a wonderful family life with his wife of seventeen years, Linda, and their 4 boys, Reuben, 16; Caleb, 15; Ethan, 12; and Colin, 10. They enjoy tennis, reading, and spending time with one another. You can reach John Oswald at joswald@nycapp.rr.com.
