Alumni Profile
Madeleine Roy describes her "former" self, a young high school graduate, as a shy girl with little self-confidence. She had attended Catholic schools, and was seeking a small, religious college when she found St. Joseph College. She enrolled in 1968 into the Executive Secretarial program, and found college to be the beginning of a new outlook on life. Singing in the College's chorus, Madeleine found the confidence she formerly lacked and began to seek out new activities. She credits her experience with campus life and community service with leading her to her current community service-based position with the Green Mountain United Way. Since September 2003, Madeleine has served as the Community Development and Marketing Director for the Green Mountain United Way, which serves Caledonia, Essex, Orange, Orleans, and Washington Counties of Vermont. Madeleine finds it very rewarding to work towards bettering the needs of the community and those who are victims of abuse, violence, or financial troubles. She also acts as an aide to children, the elderly, and physically or mentally handicapped members of these communities through the United Way and its member agencies. Previously, Madeleine served as the Director of Development at her elementary and high school alma mater, Sacred Heart School in Newport, VT, where she gained extensive experience in fundraising and marketing. She also has owned and operated an "old-time five-and-dime" store and worked as a licensed fire and casualty insurance agent. In addition to serving as the director of her church choir and doing public relations for her parish, Madeleine is a member of a five-women musical comedy group known as Wing-It. Wing-It has enjoyed immense local and international popularity and has been providing entertainment at various private and community events for the last ten years. Their next performance is scheduled for August 7, 2004, when they will provide the pre-event entertainment for the Annual Rotary Club Duck Regatta in Newport, VT.
