Nathaniel Garland '96

As a senior at a small, private high school in Maryland, Nathanial Garland was looking to attend a college in the North Carolina or Virginia areas when Southern Vermont College Coach John Marcoles visited his school.  Nate liked what Coach Marcoles said about the campus, and he came to Vermont for a weekend to visit, and was even able to play soccer with the Southern Vermont College team.  The size of the College felt right, and Nate thought it would be a good fit for him.

In 1996, Nate earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management.  While at Southern Vermont College, Nate played soccer under Coach Ray Nause.    He was named Most Valuable Player in '94 and '95 and was Captain of the soccer team in '95.

Nate currently resides in Chester, Maryland, where he is the owner of Big Bat's Café.  With two restaurants up and running and a third in the works by 2005, Nate is hopeful that Big Bat's Café will soon be available as a franchise opportunity.  The restaurants serve traditional American fare and currently employ over 140 people.

Nate considers himself married to his business (140 children!) and divides his time between the restaurants and Big Bat's corporate office.  Additionally, he is working on an MBA in Business Management through the University of Phoenix via on-line courses.  Nate still enjoys playing soccer and is a member of local soccer leagues.

You can contact Nate at nathanialgarland@bigbats.com.
