Alumni Profile
A significant portion of the student body at Southern Vermont College are non-traditional (age 24+) students who have decided to further their education by earning a degree that will help them advance in the work force. Richard Gauthier, who was a student at Southern Vermont College in 1977, returned in 1990, after a thirteen-year hiatus, to complete the requirements for a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. Rick had been working in the law-enforcement field, where Southern Vermont College is well known for its Criminal Justice program, and was impressed by the fact that many of our faculty had had actual field experience. Rick is now entering his sixth year serving as Chief of the Bennington Police Department. He has been with the Department since 1980, and his Criminal Justice degree from Southern Vermont College was necessary for his promotion to Chief. Rick recently spent ten weeks at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA, to attend a training session on Police Administration. The session earned him credits towards a master's degree in Criminal Justice Administration, which he plans to complete through Norwich University. In addition to his police work, Southern Vermont College has been fortunate to have Rick as a member of the part-time Criminal Justice faculty since 1991, when the late Dan Tange, who was then Program Coordinator, recruited him. Rick spends his free time camping, fishing, and woodworking. He and his wife Cindi have one son, Christopher, who is nineteen.
