Alumni Profile
Scott McEnaney '01
I was first attracted to SVC because it was the only place that allowed me to have a fresh start after a "less than stellar" high school performance. At the end of my high school days, my grades were vastly improved from what they were at the beginning. SVC saw that, recognized my potential, and believed that I could continue my upward trend at their institution. I was accepted to several other colleges, but all were with qualifiers (things like probation for one year, etc.). I believed in myself and wanted a college that would believe in me. When I visited the college, it just seemed to fit. The admissions staff seemed to be a real group of people who, instead of putting on a show, told me what I needed to know, made it real...and followed through. That was important to me. I enrolled in 1997 as a Business Management major. Eventually I added a "self designed minor" in Hotel and Resort Management. It allowed me to have a possible future in the ski industry without putting all my eggs in one basket. I graduated in 2001 with a bachelor's degree. The time I spent at SVC gave me the ability to believe in myself. I always had very supportive parents, grandparents, and family who believed in me...and now I had a college that believed in me. The only thing missing was my ability to believe in myself. SVC helped me to do that. Whether it was Coach Kilgallon urging me to quit smoking, and later break the College record in cross country; Professor Bobbi Gabrenya telling me to not freak out about the upcoming Business Law exam and that I would be fine; or President Sirvis asking me to speak to state legislators about the College's Everett Mansion Restoration Project. All of these people, and countless others, believed in me. It was infectious; I now also believed in me! While at SVC, I participated in cross country, baseball, and as a soccer fill-in. Coach Kilgallon is the best. He lets his student-athletes be all that THEY want to be. He is a no-pressure guy who somehow knows how to let pressure (human nature pressure) come from within and drive a person to success. I currently am employed by The Orvis Company. I am the Assistant to the Director of Outlet Stores and Event Sales. We operate 12 outlets and travel around the country liquidating merchandise that is returned, overstocked, or discontinued. I work within several areas of the company, and I rarely find myself doing the same thing twice. Lately, I spend my free time working on my newly purchased home; spending time with friends, including my wonderful girlfriend, Erin Potter '01; following the Boston Red Sox (How do you think Orvis got to be the sponsor of "The Red Sox on WBTN?"); working on my Land Rover, or fishing; running; biking; hiking; and just staying busy.
